Subject: What is relief and Development?

I think (at least I've heard) relief is that which is provided to sustain life that has been completely destabilized and threatened. It is typically that which is brought in immeadiately following (or during) a catastrophic event.

Development (again by classic definition) is that which begins at a point during relief (usually after the basic nessessities of life are met)and continues on with the goal of restoring or re-establishing stability. Usually would include restoring water supplies, housing, food, community essentials of economy, transportation etc.

I'm sure the above leaves much to be desired, but I think will begin the process of corporate definition. In other words, it will need a lot of input from other forum members. I'm sure those that are well along in the process that can help with the definitions.

I do know there is a graph which helps depict when relief and when development begins.

For the Christian, "the good Samaraitan", provides a great view of relief in action. Also, for the Christian, development begins with the "heart" (core of belief) and works toward God's intention for that person, family, community, people group. We know that it is not his will for any to perish....We know that His banner over us is love.

Well, O.K, I also know that truly implimenting a move toward His intention is no simple task. It will take every prayer and every ounce of "mission" that any "missionary" can muster.
